The accelerated deployment of photovoltaic and wind energy technologies across Europe is expected to result in growing volumes of End-of-Life equipment in the coming decades, creating significant challenges for their sustainable management. These technologies contain substantial quantities of valuable materials, including critical raw materials, electronic components, rare earth magnets, aluminium, copper, silicon, silver and composite materials, many of which are essential for the energy transition. However, the recovery and reintegration of these resources into new value chains remain constrained by a range of technical, economic and regulatory challenges faced by the European recycling sector. In response, recent European policy initiatives, such as the Critical Raw Materials Act, have identified renewable energy infrastructure, electronic equipment and associated waste streams as strategic priorities for advancing circularity, resource security and industrial resilience.
